planetGOLD Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment

Climate risk, mining livelihoods and adaptation planning across four pilot areas.

Institution or programmeUNDP planetGOLD, Ghana
Period2026

The assignment

The planetGOLD assignment examined climate risk and vulnerability in Ghana’s artisanal and small scale gold mining sector. Its geographical coverage included Atiwa West, Amenfi West, Adansi North and Prestea Huni Valley, with attention to the pilot mining sites and the communities and institutions connected to them.

Our contribution brought field evidence and stakeholder perspectives into the assessment. The work drew on site observation, discussions with miners and communities, institutional engagement, survey material and document review. These sources helped the assessment consider how climate hazards interact with working conditions, livelihoods, infrastructure and the capacity to respond.

The analytical framework connected hazards, exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity. It also considered the responsibilities and practical arrangements needed to carry adaptation measures into implementation. The resulting assessment work provides a basis for discussing priorities, allocating responsibilities and following progress.

This assignment reflects our approach to applied research: define the question, understand local conditions, bring different sources of evidence together and prepare findings for a clear decision or implementation purpose.
